Hey everyone, I know I was supposed to post the next How I draw Way of the Undead Fist today. But I wanted to instead ask for your help for a friend. My buddy Hugh who I’ve played D&D with for like… well ever since I came to LA is currently in Renal failure. His Kidneys are shot and he needs another one. Fortunately for Hugh and his family, his father is a match and is wants to donate his kidney to his son. It’s a beautiful story that’s still crazy expensive. Like many of us have found out with sick friends, and family, insurance really doesn’t cover us when we need it. So while a miracle has happened for them in being able to deliver a kidney, it also brings crushing debt. Please take a minute to donate what you can, if you can. Thank you everyone.
Hey everyone, first off thank you so much for everyone who has taken the time to write me, read the book, tip me on Tapastic and of course become a Patreon. It really means a lot to me and I have a lot of fun and get a huge boost from talking to everyone. This episode is a little shorter than the last. The camera went down and I finished the panel in the dark as it were. So I tried a different approach talking about how I approach Comics in General. In essence it’s to focus on communicating your story and vision and not over worrying that this page or that is going to be hanging in a museum. And to make sure you are drawing what you want and your art is speaking about what you want it to. This is your opportunity to say something, don’t let someone else bully you into trying to express their identity. You learned how to do this, you are doing it. Let it speak for you.
Hey everyone. Sorry about the lateness of the post. But I did not realize it was going to take that long to upload. Good news is that the reason I was not able to take care of everything as quickly as I wanted was that I was getting my son’s preschool situation sorted. Very nice school, nice teachers. Hoping to start in a couple of months. The hope is that it will free me up a bit to keep up with the comic, but I still need to figure out how to pay for it. So if you want to help make this comic a priority for my wife, here’s my Patreon Page. =) I’ll be creating and uploading more in depth pencil and inking tutorials for my Patreons. So more on the way.
Thanks to everyone for sticking with me through the hiatus. I have fun talking about what I’m drawing here. I took my last post to heart and did talk to some friends I had not seen for awhile. It’s a good feeling. It feels like positive change. One of my friends is finally getting a medical procedure done that could very well be life saving. To say that this is good news would be an understatement. So while I have gotten back on the horse I will be keeping up with my own advice. I have other friends I need to touch base with. Don’t be surprised if you hear from me soon. =)
Wow, I already do not like this. But between trying to get my son into a good preschool, Doctors appointments, contacting lawyers, plumbing, new windows, friends & family from out of town (who I was glad came) and the normal Barista work and stay at home daddy stuff… well I can understand why I’ve gotten a bit behind. I haven’t had time to record audio for the next tutorial. Though it’s all shot. So will try again next week. So I thought I’d post about something that bummed me out. That of course is the passing of Art Legend Bernie Wrightson.
Though I never met the man (those who I know did always spoke well of him), I always looked up to him as an artist. His B&W work on Swamp Thing, Frankenstein and so much more. Someone told me once that my work reminded them of Wrightson and I wanted to scream ‘Sacrilege’! But I was also appreciative of the compliment. Make no mistake, Bernie was a treasure and there will not be another artist like him in our lifetime.
However that’s not why his death saddens me. I’ve been kicking around this industry, trying to break in for 20 years. I’ve met some great artists & writers and embarrassed myself plenty. But the guys I really love, I never got to meet, or if I had the opportunity I passed it up. I could have met John Buscema, didn’t and he died months later. Will Eisner, same thing. It was easier to introduce myself to Morgan Freeman at a party than to say 2 words to a comic legend I admire. I was too young to tell my grandfather that I loved him, and that I understood that the Parkinson’s disease wasn’t him. Bernie’s passing is another influential person in my life has passed without me telling them what they or their work meant to me.
We artists and geeks can be a hermit like lot. Spending too much time in solitude, drawing, writing, gaming, wasting time on the computer. My advice to all of you is to find those people who are important in your life and tell them how much you love them. What their work has meant to you. How they touched your lives. Because in the end that’s all artists, friends and family … people want to know and hear. So next week I’ll post the tutorial. For the rest of this one, I’m going to call some old friends and have a few beers. If you’re smart, you should too. Peace and love, God Speed Bernie.
So here are the pencils for this week’s page. While I’ve switched to inking digitally, I’m still drawing all of my pages out first in Redline pencil. The future Red line pages will be available for sale as well as all of the previous fully inked pages. Part of my economic plan was to sell the original pages once I had enough people interested in the Comic. They are larger than full Comic sized art at approximately 11-1/4 x 15. (these run a little bigger to fit better in Computer screen aspect ratio.) They are fully inked (no word ballons) and make a very hansome display for collectors. I’m still working on the details, but let me know if anyone is interested. Also I will be collecting and putting together a PDF of the first 44 pages with sketches, progress pages, character bios and making of section. It will be available for my 5$ and up Patreons on my Patreon site.
I’m also hoping to call on some friends help to streamline some of site. I’m okay at figuring out most things but I’m concerned I’m not reaching everyone who has signed up for this site properly. I want to make sure everyone is getting the full Way of the Undead Experience. Even if that sounded hella corny. 😉
Thanks everyone for reading,
Matt Filer
